Do you have other tips for effective motivation letters?

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is _____________ and I am in the second year of the bachelor’s degree programme at the Institute of Economic Studies at Charles University in Prague. I am writing because I am very interested in the opportunity to spend the first semester next year as an Erasmus student at the University of Leipzig Faculty of Economics and Management Science.

Working in cross-border regional development projects in Central Europe is my long-term goal/My goal is to increase my knowledge and understanding of cross-border regional development projects in Central Europe. I first became interested in regional development when working as a tutor for economically disadvantaged students in my home city which is in an industrial region with high unemployment levels. The project was funded by the EU and I realized the impact these types of projects can have.

I have selected the University of Leipzig Faculty of Economics and Management Science because of the relevance of the courses to my educational path and the possibility of doing an internship. In order to pursue my passion, I have selected courses on regional development that are not offered at my home university. In particular I am interested in the work of Professor ____________ and the following courses: ___________________, ___________________. These courses would also help me to find a German-Czech cross border project to focus on in my thesis. I would utilise the opportunity to take the ___________ course on project management as well as I know that this will be a key skill for my future. Through an internship I would hope to gain skills and experience including intercultural skills, a better understanding of the everyday workings of the German economic model and the opportunity to meet local people.

Having studied German for 3 years, I am keen to improve my language skills and become part of the community. As I am a social person who enjoys interacting with people, I envision doing this not only through courses but also by participating in other university activities such as playing football and attending local cultural events.

I am very keen to participate in this programme because studying economics in a German university in a region which was part of the socialist bloc like the Czech Republic would give me new perspectives on the issues such regions face, deepening my understanding of regional development. I hope that I could contribute a Czech point of view. I am convinced that studying in Germany, the most powerful economic player in the EU, would provide me with knowledge and skills for my future.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

_______________
